Running to its own Rhythm: Lessons from the Brahmaputra in Assam

Rivers and their tributaries are storytellers. They bring tales from the lands that they flow through. An inspiration to art, music, literature and poetry for generations, as the Brahmaputra flows through Assam, it forms an indispensable relationship with everything it touches along the way. The fate of all that lives on the banks of this mighty, untamed river, are tied to its moods and changing courses. It sustains and subdues, damages as much as it creates.

And the villagers along its banks have evolved with the river. They respectfully submit to it, revere it. There is uncertainty along the banks. But from it rises resilience and innovation.

There is a lot we can learn from the land and people that surround this river that runs to its own rhythm.

So much life packed into a small space! The fate of all life is tied to the moods and course of the river. Destruction becomes regeneration. Uncertainty becomes a way of being in order to sustain.

When you travel to the Brahmaputra with us, you will feel the life of the river through its wildlife in Kazirangaand it’s riverine communities. From the daily routines of the Misings of Majuli to the impermanence of the Char-Chaporis (sandbanks)and its people, from silk, tea and local delicacies to tradition, music, dance and art, the Brahmaputra swirls with scenes of life and death. Many stories, punctuated with grand silences. And while things are the way they are, the people and the animals of this river take it very seriously – just being alive that is.

On this journey along the Brahmaputra in Assam you will live aboard a boat, in local homestay and lodges and in doing so you will be contributing to conservation efforts made by Wild Mahseer along with the Balipara Foundation, Diphlu river Lodge and the riverine communities.
